The Future of Payments: 2 Mobile Trends to Watch

By Richard Baker

It just seemed like yesterday we were trading checkbooks for debit cards, but in a few short years, even debit cards might become obsolete.   Here are two upcoming trends to watch:

Square Card Case

A little over a year ago, I wrote about Square, a credit card processing platform you can use on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Now, Square is making life easier not only for businesses, but for their customers.  With Card Case, you can use the Square app to start a tab at a local retailer.  Simply “pay with your name” when you place an order, and you’ll receive a text message with your receipt.  You’ll also be able to use the Square app to search for deals in your area and look at menus for local restaurants.

Unfortunately, Square Card Case is only available in a few retailers in large cities.  Click hereKeep reading

What to Expect After Microsoft’s Acquisition of Skype

By Anne Shenton

As you have probably heard, Microsoft purchased Skype for a whopping $8.5 billion last week.  Some of you probably use Skype either on your desktop and smartphone, and I’m sure most of you use at least one Microsoft product.  For those who are unfamiliar with Skype, it is a powerful video calling tool that you can use for free on your computer or smartphone.  This deal will probably affect you to some extent, but how exactly? Skype’s recent press release about the acquisition sheds some light for us.  Here are some highlights:

Skype will be incorporated into Microsoft’s existing products

This is a no-brainer, but some of the products include:

  • Xbox and Kinect (video gaming system)
  • Windows Phones (similar to the iPhone’s FaceTime)
  • Lync (a new instant messaging system)
  • Outlook

What does this mean for you?  Well, if you’re already using any of these products, you can look forward to … Keep reading

How to Backup Your Emails from Gmail

Google has taken some heat lately for losing data from their customers’ Gmail accounts.  This unfortunate incident highlighted the importance of data backups.  What if we’re not so lucky next time, and all of your emails are permanently erased?  One possible solution is a free download called Gmail Backup.  This program is very easy to use.  Here is a quick how-to.

1. Download and run the program on your computer.

2. Once the program has installed, open it and enter your Gmail account information.

3. Click on Directory to choose the folder you to use for backing up your emails.  I created a folder called “Gmail Backup.”

Find the folder you wish to backup your files in.

4. Unless you wish to only save your newest emails, uncheck the “Newest emails only” box and select the date range you wish to use.

5. Click on Backup to begin your Gmail backup.

Social Media Marketing Case Study: MarCraft, Inc.

By Anne Shenton

Over the past two months, Leigh and I have been busy as bees working with the fantastic folks at MarCraft, Inc., helping them with their internet marketing efforts.  MarCraft is the nation’s largest manufacturer of custom cultured marble and granite vanity tops, shower pans and bath tubs. We were proud to launch their new website, Facebook fan page and YouTube videos last week.

The Challenge

When LJ Chambers, Buck Chambers and Kim Voyles, all Vice Presidents at MarCraft, Inc., approached us back in February, they had one thing on their mind: developing a strong internet marketing presence for MarCraft.  The three VP’s had a strong vision for where they wanted to go, but they just needed the right tools to get there.  That’s where we came in.

The Process

After two weeks of meeting and strategizing, we put together a comprehensive 90-day marketing plan that included a new website, Facebook … Keep reading

Manage Your Money and Your Trips with Two Great Web Tools

By

Information overload is inescapable.  It’s even taken over our finances!  It’s rare (maybe impossible?) to find a person who uses the same financial institution for everything: checking accounts, savings accounts, mortgage, CD’s, IRA’s, 401(k)s, etc.  If you take advantage of online services for your accounts, the ability to access your accounts is convenient.  But hopping from site to site doesn’t really give you the “big picture” of where you stand financially.  That’s why I love Mint:  it shows me the big picture.

With a little legwork in the beginning, Mint will aggregate all of your accounts and display your information in an easy-to-digest fashion.  You’ll see how you’re spending and the totals of your assets and debts. You can even go a step further and plan out budget and savings goals.  Worried about security?  Have no fear; Mint operates with bank-level data security, and you can’t move any … Keep reading
